In a Facebook post, Maszlee said he met with Anwar Ibrahim this morning and the PKR president gave him the mandate to stand in Simpang Renggam.
“I was asked by the president to come to his office this morning, and received a mandate from him to ‘defend Simpang Renggam at all costs, for the future of Malaysia, and for the future of our education (system)’,” said the former Simpang Renggam MP.
Maszlee won the seat as a Pakatan Harapan candidate in the last general election (GE14) with a majority of 3,475 votes against Gerakan’s Liang Teck Meng and Jubri Selamat from PAS.
He was a Bersatu Supreme Council member, until he was sacked from the party in June 2020, along with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and three others.
He subsequently joined Pejuang, the party set up by Mahathir, before leaving in November 2020. He then joined PKR in November 2021.
He contested the Layang-Layang seat in the Johor state elections in March but lost to Umno’s Abdul Mutalip Abd Rahim.
