PASIR MAS:
The rural development ministry is considering writing off the debts of 20,000 settlers in Felcra land schemes, amounting to RM230 million.

Minister Mahdzir Khalid said an announcement on this would be made soon.

“This debt arrears issue has been raised for over 30 years by Felcra settlers,” he said. “This involves the current generation and also those who have died.”

The settlers on its land schemes incurred debts for land clearing, fencing and planting of trees which were paid off with revenue from the crops.

“If these debts are not written off, future generations will also experience the same problem,” he said. “We hope there will be a solution once Felcra chairman Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub presents his plans to the ministry,” he said.
