Bersatu associate wing chief Chong Fat Full was responding to a PAS leader’s warning that the party would go to the streets if upcoming scheduled international concerts were not called off.
“Cancelling concerts is not the best way to handle hedonism because the rakyat is still able to access content via the internet, which is impossible to control,” Chong said in a statement.
He said the best approach was through a proactive government policy and moral and religious education.
“We all know that all religions are against hedonism,” he said.
“Malaysia is a multiracial and multicultural country with various religions. We celebrate and are proud of these differences. PAS is an old party and has cooperated with many other parties. Surely they would know what works for our multicultural society.”
Earlier this week, PAS youth chief and Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari called on the government to cancel international concerts because they encouraged hedonism and were incompatible with the norms and values of Muslim life in Malaysia.
“We will not hesitate to mobilise resistance throughout the country if (this call) is ignored,” he said in a Facebook post.
Fadhli also said the organising of mega concerts was “crazy work that invites the wrath of Allah”.
His posting on Facebook was made in the wake of a concert held by American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish the night before.
However, he later said that concerts with international artistes could still be held in PAS-ruled states if the artistes did not have a perverse lifestyle.
