PETALING JAYA:
A smuggler with six undocumented migrants in tow led police on a 30km car chase in Kelantan yesterday, driving against traffic at one point to evade the pursuers.

Gua Musang district police chief Sik Choon Foo said the SUV driven by a 45-year-old Malaysian made a U-turn in a suspicious manner and sped towards Gua Musang town.

According to Utusan Malaysia, a patrol car conducting checks at Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Lipis near Kampung Lepan Jaya at 9.30am yesterday spotted the car and gave chase.

The car ran several red lights, including those in front of the Gua Musang district police headquarters.

“After a 30km chase, it was forced to stop by the patrol car,” he said.

During a scuffle which followed, the driver suffered minor injuries to his face and left hand. A policeman also sustained minor injuries.

The six undocumented Myanmar migrants, including two women, aged 17 to 26, were also arrested.

“We believe that the suspect regularly smuggled undocumented migrants. He was transporting the six Myanmar nationals from Rantau Panjang to Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

The case is being probed under Section 26A of the Anti-Trafficking In Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 (Atipsom), Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act and Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
