Man who threw children off MRR2 had mental health issues, say cops

Sentul police chief Beh Eng Lai says the Myanmar refugee had often talked to himself over the past year after recovering from Covid-19.

The Myanmar refugee and two of his children died at the scene at MRR2. A third child is receiving treatment at Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s intensive care unit.
PETALING JAYA:
The Myanmar refugee who threw his three children off the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) highway before taking his own life had mental health issues, police said.

Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai said the 38-year-old UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cardholder had often talked to himself over the past year after recovering from Covid-19.

“We managed to locate the mother of the children involved in the unfortunate event, who is also the man’s wife, last night.

“The wife, aged 28, is also a UNHCR cardholder and told us that her husband had spoken about his intention to take his own life previously,” Beh said in an Utusan Malaysia report.

He said the woman only knew her children were missing after returning home at 10pm on Monday. The incident occurred early the next morning.

“The woman, who works as a restaurant helper, was not at home during the incident. As soon as she got home, she tried to call her husband and look for him, but failed,” he said.

The man eventually picked up the phone at 5am before the incident took place just 3km from their home.

Beh said the male child who survived, the couple’s youngest, was still being treated in intensive care at Hospital Kuala Lumpur. The child was in the process of getting his own UNHCR card.

The man was found dead at the scene along with his daughter and another son. Both children also had UNHCR cards.
