MELAKA:
A woman lost RM4,700 from her bank account when her money disappeared after downloading an “android package kit” (APK) file to place an order for house cleaning services.

Melaka police chief Zainol Samah said in the incident yesterday, the 46-year-old victim was lured by an advertisement offering house cleaning services at RM50 for five hours on Facebook.

“The victim, from Kuala Sungai Baru, dealt with a suspect who introduced herself as Fiona and was instructed to download the ‘shinecleanmaid’ app via the link provided by the suspect to make the booking.

“The woman then downloaded the app and filled in the details, making an advance payment of RM10,” he said.

Zainol said the payment was not successful and the victim was instructed to pay in cash after the cleaning service was done.

After 30 minutes, he said the victim received a message from her bank informing that there was a transfer of RM4,700 from her account to a third party account.

She then informed the bank that her account could have been hacked.

The victim lodged a report yesterday at the Kuala Sungai Baru police station and the case is being investigated for cheating.

Zainol said his team had only received one such report but advised the public to be careful over offers on social media and not to fill in personal details through links provided by unknown parties.

“As a precautionary measure, people are asked not to easily believe advertisements on social media, and not to download or install APKs sent directly to the phone by unknown individuals,” he said.
