The 25-year-old doctor was three weeks into his housemanship at the hospital when he fell to his death from his residence here on April 17.
“The case remains classified as sudden death as we have yet to ascertain any criminal elements that warrant a reclassification,” northeast district police chief Soffian Santong told reporters at the sidelines of an event at the George Town police headquarters here.
The death of the houseman prompted widespread speculation that he could have been a victim of an abusive workplace. However, the state health department had vigorously denied the claim.
Soffian said so far, police had interviewed the houseman’s immediate colleagues, parents and family members.
He said the investigation was nearly complete and would be handed over to the Penang prosecutor’s office shortly.
“We are working on completing the investigation as soon as possible,” he said.
The incident also led to numerous junior doctors nationwide claiming they had been victims of bullying.
Many took to social media where they posted anonymously about their alleged accounts of abuse by senior doctors and the mental anguish they faced.
The government recently announced that a 10-person task force was being set up to improve the work culture in the national health service following claims of bullying and mental stress by health workers.
