Insurance agent claims trial for drink driving, causing death

The 57-year-old driver is accused of causing the death of a 76-year-old man having dinner on a five-foot way.

KUALA LUMPUR:
An insurance agent was today charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and causing the death of a 76-year-old man having dinner along a five-foot way.

K Meena Sundram, 57, claimed trial before magistrate Amanina Mohamad Anuar.

Meena, who was charged under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act, is alleged to have committed the offence at Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur at about 8.50pm on March 20, causing the death of Soh Cheng Keong @ Soh Chin Kiew.

If found guilty, he can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined up to RM100,000 and his driving licence suspended for seven years.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Syuhada Abd Rauf proposed bail of RM15,000.

Amanina ordered bail of RM12,000 in one surety and that Meena’s driving licence be suspended pending the outcome of the trial. Lawyer P Ari Krishnan said a brother of the accused posted bail.

The case will come up for mention on May 3.
