With Undi18, 6.9% of voters are under 21, says minister

Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar says of these 1,441,794 youth voters, almost 20% are from Selangor.

Malaysia has 1,441,794 voters aged between 18 and 20, according to law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

These young voters form 6.9% of the 21,026,110 in the 2021 electoral roll gazetted by the Election Commission (EC) on Jan 17, he said in a written reply to a question posed by Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Wan Junaidi said Selangor had the highest number of new voters aged below 21 with 280,495, followed by Johor (176,618), and Sarawak (133,015).

For Selangor, Bangi had the highest number of voters aged 18 to 20 at 26,806, followed by Kota Raja (22,570), and Kapar (16,182). All three parliamentary seats are currently held by Pakatan Harapan.

“The EC gazetted the additional electoral register for December 2021 on Jan 14 this year.

“It is the first additional electoral register gazetted after Undi18 and automatic voter registration was enforced on Dec 15, 2021,” Wan Junaidi said.

The recent Johor polls was the first election held after Undi18 and automatic voter registration became law.
