However, Shafie said his party was not looking to form the government in Johor.
“Our focus is on forming the federal government,” he said when launching the party’s Johor chapter.
A few days after the dissolution of the Johor state assembly on Jan 22, Shafie was reported as saying that the party will monitor the situation before making a decision on entering the fray in the Johor polls.
He also said he will get feedback from his “friend” Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is Muda president and Muar MP, on the matter.
According to Shafie, the Sabah-based party – which officially spread its wings to the peninsula on Dec 17 – has many supporters in Pasir Gudang and Johor Bahru, where many Sabahans and Sarawakians reside.
Meanwhile, Shafie announced former Kukup assemblyman Suhaimi Salleh as the Johor Warisan chief.
When met, Suhaimi said he was confident that Johoreans would back the party, adding many had expressed interest to join it.
“I decided on joining Warisan a long time ago. The party has something to offer in a new political landscape.”
There are 56 seats up for grabs in the Johor state elections. There is no indication yet as to the number of seats the party was planning to contest.
Johor will go to the polls on March 12 with early voting taking place on March 8, and nomination day set for Feb 26.
