Azam should voluntarily appear before PSC, says Kit Siang

The DAP veteran says it is important for the nation's top graft buster to clear any public doubt about his integrity.

Lim Kit Siang has urged Azam Baki to answer questions on conflict-of-interest allegations to clear himself.
PETALING JAYA:
DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang has urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki to voluntarily appear before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department next Wednesday and explain his corporate shares ownership issue.

The Iskandar Puteri MP said the nation’s top graft buster should answer any question on the allegations that he is facing in order to clear any public doubt about his integrity so that this scandal affecting the reputation of the anti-graft agency can be resolved as soon as possible.

“To ensure that the national furore over ‘Azam-gate’ is resolved at the earliest available opportunity, I suggest that he voluntarily appear before the PSC on Jan 19 to answer questions on conflict-of-interest allegations to clear himself,” he said.

Lim also urged the PSC to table a report on the issue during the special Dewan Rakyat sitting on Jan 20 that has been called to discuss the recent floods disaster.

Earlier today, FMT reported that the PSC would meet on Jan 19 to discuss Azam’s ownership of corporate shares.

In a press conference last week, Azam maintained that he had done nothing wrong, and said that his brother used his trading account to purchase shares and warrants in two public-listed companies in 2015 and 2016.

In the same press conference, Abu Zahar Ujang, the chairman of the agency’s Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB), cleared Azam of any wrongdoing.

However, his defence of Azam was called into question when six ACAB members distanced themselves from his statement, claiming that Abu Zahar was only stating his personal view.
