Kuala Lumpur police criminal investigation department chief Saiful Annuar Yusoff said an initial investigation showed the girl is a Malaysian aged about five.
In a statement, he said the incident happened at her grandmother’s house, where the girl’s family had gathered to prepare for a wedding.
He said that according to the girl’s father, she suffers from hyperactivity disorder. It is understood that she had climbed over the balcony to look at the swimming pool below.
However, about three minutes later, her parents persuaded her to get back into the house.
Saiful said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which deals with children being neglected, abandoned or exposed in a manner likely to cause them physical or emotional injury.
Those convicted may be fined not more than RM50,000 or jailed for not more than 20 years or both.
