Johor floods worsen, more than 4,000 at relief centres

The flood situation in Johor is reported to be worsening with the number of people at temporary evacuation centres rising to more than 4,000.

Johor health and environment committee chairman R Vidyananthan said the number of flood victims in the state had increased to 4,278 victims from 1,130 families at 70 relief centres as at 4pm.

He said this was an increase compared to 4,062 victims at noon yesterday.

Muar became the eighth and newest district in Johor to be affected by the floods when 52 people from 14 families were evacuated.

Vidyananthan said Segamat continued to be the worst affected district with 3,344 people from 872 families evacuated this evening compared to 3,284 people from 853 families this afternoon.

A total of 70 relief centres are now open in Johor, with Segamat having the most at 47, followed by Tangkak (7), Mersing (6), Kota Tinggi (3), Kluang (3), Muar (2), Johor Bahru (1), and Batu Pahat (1), he said in a statement quoted by Berita Harian.

He said most of the flood victims were at SK Kampung Tenang in Segamat (502 victims from 157 families), SJKC Tah Kang in Segamat (319 victims from 85 families) and SK Batu Anam in Segamat (256 victims from 70 families).

Tangkak became the second district affected by the floods with 161 victims from 45 families evacuated, while in Mersing 395 victims from 101 families were housed at relief centres.

Kota Tinggi had 203 flood victims from 60 families, and Batu Pahat had 50 victims from 14 families at Balai Raya Kampung Haji Kamisan.

In Johor Bahru, two flood victims from one family were housed at Dewan Raya Sungai Tiram.
