PAS may just have to return to Umno’s side, says academic

Azmi Hassan also says PKR and Amanah’s decision to welcome Umno defectors may have led to protest votes.

PETALING JAYA:
The Islamic party PAS may have no choice but to return to the Muafakat Nasional (MN) fold with Umno after its abysmal performance in the Melaka election tonight, an academic said.

Azmi Hassan also said the party would have to rethink its affiliation with Perikatan Nasional, under whose ticket it contested in the state elections, as it lost in all its eight seats.

“PAS has no choice since PN did badly,” he told FMT.

PAS had decided to contest under the PN banner, which led to some predicting the demise of MN, a pact it forged with Umno in 2019.

Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, however insisted that MN was still alive, while PAS information chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad said earlier this month that the party’s decision to contest under PN did not mean it was severing ties with Umno.

Separately, Azmi did not discount the possibility that Pakatan Harapan’s loss could be due to the decision by PKR and Amanah to welcome two of the four assemblymen who helped topple the previous state government.

“There could have been protest votes. DAP was uneasy with PKR and Amanah welcoming the former Umno men.”

PKR took in former Melaka chief minister Idris Haron, while Amanah roped in Nor Azman Hassan. Both lost in their respective seats Asahan and Pantai Kundor.
