Ex-PMs given police outriders as part of their privileges, says IGP

Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani says the services are also extended to those facing court action 'until the appeal process has been exhausted'.

Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani says former prime ministers are provided police outriders under the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980.
PETALING JAYA:
Police will continue to provide outrider services for all former prime ministers as part of their privileges, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said.

These services will also be extended to any former prime minister facing legal action until the courts determine that the appeal process has been exhausted, he said.

Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh had raised the issue of former prime ministers receiving outrider services in Parliament on Nov 10.

“Why give way to VIPs who have clearly been convicted of corruption?

“Why do they need the police to escort them?” she said.

Acryl Sani said former prime ministers were provided police outriders under the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980.

“Recently, PDRM had discovered multiple parties opposing the former prime ministers’ outrider privileges,” he said in a statement.

When Pakatan Harapan took over power in 2018, the outrider services for former prime minister Najib Razak were revoked, with the condition that he may only apply for them for official purposes.

When former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was campaigning in 2016, the Najib-led administration revoked the same privileges.
