PETALING JAYA:
Police have confirmed that they issued a RM4,000 compound notice to a party volunteer for taking part in a walkabout in Alor Gajah, Melaka, as it is an offence under the infectious diseases law.

Melaka police chief Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said the SOPs were clear about walkabouts and campaigning during the Melaka state election.

“We issued the compound notice as the person was taking part in a walkabout. This is not allowed in the SOPs.

“When you wear clothing with a political party logo, there is an element of campaigning,” he told FMT.

Earlier, PKR’s Fahmi Fadzil said a compound notice had been issued to a person said to be a Pakatan Harapan volunteer for wearing a party jacket at a warung in Kampung Melaka Pindah, Alor Gajah.

The person was fined RM4,000 on Wednesday and told to settle the amount by Nov 25 or face court charges.

Previously, Melaka police had issued a RM10,000 compound notice to a party that held a “mobile political ceramah”, although there was no crowd present, on Oct 30.

The compound was issued under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, which outlaws public gatherings.
