Another unmasked ‘Karen’ incident – cops seek witnesses

Police have opened an investigation into a video of an incident at Bangsar Shopping Centre.

PETALING JAYA:
Brickfields police are seeking witnesses to a ruckus at a Bangsar shopping mall after a foreign woman was denied entry, apparently for not wearing a mask.

Brickfields police chief Amihizam Abdul Shukor said an investigation had been opened into a possible breach of Covid-19 rules under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

In a statement this evening, he referred to a 20-second video circulating on social media which showed an unmasked woman, believed to be a foreign national aged 51, confronting a security guard of a mall before storming off.

Earlier this week, a foreign woman was barred from entering the Dior store at Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and came under fire from social media users after a video of her causing a scene went viral.

Netizens labelled her a “Karen”, a term often used in the US and on the internet to describe women who attempt to wield white privilege. The term was trending on Twitter in Malaysia earlier in the week.

In the KLCC video, the woman is heard claiming that she was threatened by an employee at the boutique, saying that when she attempted to walk in without her mask, the man “put his hands on (her) and pushed (her)”. The employee could be heard denying the assertions in the video.

It was not clear if the incident in Bangsar involved the same woman.

However, the police statement noted that the latest video, posted on Twitter at 11.30pm last night, had the headline “Spotted the Karen making another scene at BSC” and the hashtags #KarenDior and #KarenKLCC.

Amihizam said those with information on the incident can go to their nearest police station or contact Brickfields police at 03-2297 9222 or the KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
