State PKR chief Halim Bachik told FMT he did not rule out the possibility of some resignations next month among supporters of those who would be rejected as candidates in the Nov 20 state election.

But he added that he expected “only a few” to quit.

Political analysts recently warned PKR that a failure to drop rogue leaders from its list of candidates could strengthen their influence.

Asked whether PKR was amenable to having three or four assemblymen who triggered the downfall of the state government to contest under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner, Halim said he would leave this to the party’s central leadership.

PH has yet to decide whether it would allow former chief minister and Sungai Udang incumbent Idris Haron, Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor) to contest under the PH banner.

The coalition has shut the door on former DAP man Norhizam Hassan Baktee, the Pengkalan Batu incumbent.

Halim said Idris, Effandi and Nor Azman would be valuable assets to any party.

He defended the actions of the three and Norhizam, saying they would not have withdrawn support for the Barisan Nasional-led state government without good reason.

“My view of the four assemblymen is that they actually did that to save Melaka,” he said.

However, he maintained his position that there was no need for the state assembly to be dissolved to make way for an election with Covid-9 still raging.
