Take a firm stand about elections during pandemic, PH told

PH leaders in Melaka and Sarawak have given opposing views on whether state elections should be held at this time.

State assembly elections are due to be held in Melaka, but the Sarawak elections have been postponed.
PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan has been urged to take a firm stand about whether a general election should be held in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In Melaka, where the state assembly has been dissolved, the state PH has come out against using a state of emergency to postpone the state assembly elections, as mooted by several parties.

In Sarawak, several leaders of the coalition have previously spoken against having elections in the midst of the pandemic, to ensure the people’s safety.

Universiti Malaya analyst Awang Azman Pawi said the national leadership of Pakatan Harapan should take a firm stand, to avoid the perception that it was flip-flopping or being opportunistic.

“Not just on this issue but on all matters. PH needs to be seen as being decisive and consistent so they do not lose the people’s trust,” Awang Azman said.

He said an election now would surely benefit the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak which had a stronger machinery and more resources.

PH would probably prefer to have Undi18 (the lower voting age of 18) to be implemented before any elections are held, because younger voters do not yet have a firm inclination towards any party, compared to older voters who tend to vote based on party loyalty.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah senior lecturer Lee Kuok Tiung said those pushing for elections now were risking the wrath of voters, many of whom are struggling to survive the health and economic crisis.

He said that although Sarawak PH has cited health concerns in opposing state elections at this time, a delay would benefit the coalition, giving it more time to come to an arrangement with local opposition Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) to ensure a straight fight against the GPS.

“There is talk on the ground that PH wants to form an alliance with PSB, which will definitely boost their chances,” he said.
