He said he came to the decision after evaluating opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s (PH-Port Dickson) application to the Speaker for the punishment to be reduced.
“I respect this House but I also need to be respected by Dewan Rakyat representatives. I can use my discretion to decide on just one day (for his suspension), tomorrow he can come in.”
However, Rashid called for less “provocation” in the Dewan Rakyat so that things could proceed more smoothly.
Earlier, Anwar had applied to Rashid to reduce Rayer’s two-day suspension and allow the DAP man to return to the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow.
“Whether the term ‘memalukan’ (shameful) is crude or not, I do not want to dispute the deputy speaker’s decision.
“There were 40-50 elected representatives who said ‘memalukan’, unless they want to suspend 50 people … if possible can (Jelutong) be allowed to come in tomorrow,” Anwar said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali (PN-Kuala Nerus) said Rayer should apologise and promise not to repeat his actions before being allowed to return to the Dewan Rakyat.
Rayer had earlier been ejected from the Dewan Rakyat for calling Rashid’s decision to reject motions to replace Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun “memalukan”.
His suspension came after he refused to retract his statement, which Rashid deemed to be impolite.
Rayer had accused Rashid of not being transparent and failing to provide a reasonable explanation for rejecting the opposition’s motion to request for Azhar’s resignation.
“This is an abuse of power, the people can see. This is shameless,” Rayer had said before he was expelled.
