Being fully vaccinated no reason to forget SOPs, KJ tells people

Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin responds to viral videos and photos of large crowds not following SOPs in the city centre and recreational parks over the weekend.

Many people were seen not following the basic SOPs of wearing face masks and observing physical distancing during their outings over the weekend.
PETALING JAYA:
Being fully vaccinated is not a reason to be complacent with simple public health SOPs such as wearing face masks, physical distancing, and hand-washing, health minister Khairy Jamaluddin reminded Malaysians today.

This comes after large crowds were seen in the city centre and recreational parks after the Klang Valley moved to Phase 2 of the national recovery plan (NRP) on Sept 10. Most of the people were seen not following the basic SOPs of wearing face masks and observing physical distancing.

“I understand many are excited with this exemption especially after nearly three months under Phase 1 of the NRP and the full movement control order (MCO) before that. However, such activities have caused large crowds and low compliance to SOPs,” he wrote in a Facebook post this evening.

He also worries that the country may not be able to move to the endemic phase of Covid-19 management if the SOP non-compliance continues.

Before this, Khairy had said the government had planned to enter the endemic phase by the end of October.

However, he said, this would require the full cooperation of all Malaysians.

He also warned that it is not impossible for the situation to take a turn for the worse if the complacency continues.

Under Phase 2, fully vaccinated individuals may dine in at food premises and take part in tourism activities, including staying in hotels and homestays within the state.
