
They also slammed him for assuming that no other leader commands parliamentary majority support, stating that this was a matter for the King to decide.
“This is the first time in the history of Malaysia that a prime minister has admitted to losing majority support but yet openly continues to solicit support from the opposition,” they said.
“Pakatan Harapan has taken a stand to firmly push aside all the insincere offers that Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) should have made earlier, rather than at the end of his political life,” PH said in a statement.
The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
In a televised address today, Muhyiddin proposed a number of reforms should he win September’s confidence vote.
These included term limits for prime ministers, resources for the opposition leader equivalent to those of a senior Cabinet minister, and immediately lowering the voting age to 18 without the implementation of automatic voter registration.
Muhyiddin also said all MPs would receive the same annual allocations regardless of political affiliation, with opposition MPs’ allocation for 2021 increased on a pro rata basis for the remaining months of the year.
“This is also the first time a prime minister without legitimacy has blatantly offered bribes on live television in front of the rakyat,” they added.
During his address, Muhyiddin said the decision by several MPs to withdraw support for him meant that there were concerns over his legitimacy as prime minister.
In response, the PH presidential council said Muhyiddin’s statement was an “open confession” that he had lost majority support in the Dewan Rakyat – and they called on him to resign as per Article 43 (4) of the Federal Constitution.
“We are confident that we can put forward a better plan, especially in terms of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, reviving the economy and saving the rakyat and livelihoods.”
