PETALING JAYA:
Special child Bella, a Down Syndrome girl, is shy and soft-spoken. She loves to hug those who take care of her, and she calls them “mother.”

But Bella is also a victim of abuse, having suffered burns all over her chest, hands, neck and thighs.

For deputy women, family and community development minister Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff, it was deeply saddening to see the plight of Bella.

She said Bella, whom she visited recently, is currently under the custody of the welfare department.

“Seeing her breaks my heart,” Siti Zailah said on Facebook.

The deputy minister also said she had contacted Bukit Aman sexual, women and child investigations division (D11) assistant director Siti Kamsiah Hassan over the matter.

Siti Zailah said the police assured her that action would be taken against anyone involved in abusing the girl.

“I have full confidence in their commitment to handle this case.”

Yesterday, the police announced that the probe into Bella’s case had been completed and that investigation papers had been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

It was reported earlier that a girl with Down Syndrome had been abused in a charity home operated by an NGO.

Kuala Lumpur criminal investigation department chief Saiful Annuar Yusoff had said the victim was found with burn marks on parts of her body.

Besides the victim, six other children also stayed at the same premises but did not sustain any injuries.
