In a press conference, Adham said the MAEPS integrated hospital’s scope of services would be increased to treat more Category 3 and 4 Covid-19 patients.
He said MAEPS’ oxygen capacity will be increased to handle over 1,500 patients, while 4,888 beds have been set aside for this purpose.
The MAEPS facility had started out as a low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre.
To address the surge in cases in the Klang Valley, Adham said all other hospitals, except for Hospital Shah Alam, will be converted into hybrid Covid-19 hospitals.
Meanwhile, bed capacity in the region will be increased from 3,412 beds to 3,777 in Selangor, as well as 795 to 1,129 in KL and Putrajaya.
“We will work with three university hospitals, namely Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Specialist Children’s Hospital (HPKK UKM), and Universiti Putra Malaysia Teaching Hospital (HUPM) to optimise bed usage in these hospitals.
“This increases the total number of beds to treat Covid-19 patients in the Klang Valley to over 5,000,” he said.
Emergency ward beds in Selangor will be increased from 486 to 591, while ICU beds will also be added in the state, from 280 previously to 349. Meanwhile, ICU beds in KL and Putrajaya will be increased from 90 to 117.
Non-Covid-19 patients in health ministry hospitals have also started being outsourced to private hospitals to allow government facilities to focus on treating Covid-19 patients.
Over RM100 million will be allocated to foot the bill for outsourcing these patients to private hospitals.
