PETALING JAYA:
Selangor’s public health executive councillor Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud has disputed vaccine minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s claims on the number of vaccinations the state can administer.

In a statement, Siti Mariah said Selangor could give 87,616 doses daily, more than double the 40,000 capacity that Khairy claimed the state had.

“With 73 vaccination centres (PPVs) across Selangor currently, the daily vaccination capacity of all PPVs in Selangor is 87,616 doses,” she said.

However, she said the vaccination rate was at 53,037 doses a day due to the lack of vaccine supply. Khairy had said Selangor had received about 40,000 shots of vaccine a day.

She said Selangor had received some 1.1 million doses as of June 27, of which 954,051 had been administered. This meant that there were 235,277 doses left, or about 20%.

Siti Mariah said this amount would only last for two days if PPVs were operating at full capacity.

However, she said she was informed that the state health department would be receiving 60,000 doses today, thanking Putrajaya for the supply.

Nonetheless, she reiterated that the issue Selangor was facing was not a lack of vaccination capacity or PPVs but of vaccine supply.

She expressed confidence that Selangor would be able to achieve its target of administering 135,000 doses daily in July and 165,000 a day in August once the state’s own immunisation drive begins, in parallel with the national vaccination programme.

In response to claims that Selangor was running low on vaccines, Khairy earlier said the number of jabs supplied to the state was based on its daily capacity.

He added that he was previously informed by Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari that the state had a capacity for 40,000 daily vaccinations for June.

Yesterday, Khairy’s science adviser Mohd Ghows Azzam said Selangor had 339,000 vaccines at hand, which he added was enough to last for a week.

He said that in response to Siti Mariah who had claimed that several PPVs would be running out of vaccines and would be forced to halt operations if Selangor did not receive new supplies.
