10% of population to be fully vaccinated by mid-July, says Khairy

The government is aiming to administer 10.7 million doses by next month to allow for Phase 2 of recovery plan.

In order to fully immunise 10% of the population and move into Phase 2 of the national recovery plan, 10.7 million doses have to be administered, says Khairy Jamaluddin.
PETALING JAYA:
The government projects 10% of the population to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 by mid-July, says vaccine coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

According to Khairy, Putrajaya is looking to administer some eight million doses in June, with the aim of reaching 10.7 million doses by the middle of next month.

“Currently, for every 100 doses that we administer, 30 are the second dose,” he said in a joint press conference with health minister Dr Adham Baba today.

“So, in order to fully immunise 10% of the population, or 3.2 million people, we need to administer roughly 10.7 million doses.”

He said this target took into consideration the current vaccine supply and vaccination centre capacities.

Malaysia can only move into the second phase of the national recovery plan when 10% of the population has received both doses of the vaccine, daily cases drop below 4,000, and the healthcare system is no longer at a critical level.

A total of 5.67 million doses have been administered so far, of which 1.6 million were second doses.

Adham announced that the country’s infectivity rate, R0 (or R-naught), had been increasing since June 12, although it remained below 1.0. It currently stands at 0.96.

He also said 561,156 Covid-19 tests were conducted in the past seven days, with a positivity rate of 6.9%, a 0.3% increase compared with the previous week.

Meanwhile, the number of daily new cases and patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) have decreased by 6.5% and 0.6%, respectively. The average occupancy rate at ICUs now stood at 85%.

Adham added that 142 new clusters were recorded in the past week, of which 97 were detected at workplaces while none came from religious activities.

He also said among the healthcare workers that were infected with Covid-19 despite being fully vaccinated, only one was a Stage 4 case.

“Everyone else was Stage 1 and 2. This shows that vaccinations are effective in protecting those who are infected with Covid-19 from falling critically ill,” he said.
