KUCHING:
The Sarawak election is not a priority of the ruling GPS government, which will focus on efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19, chief minister Abang Johari Openg said.

“The GPS government will give priority to efforts to fight Covid-19. Other matters such as the state election could be held later when the situation permits,” he said in a Hari Raya Aidilfitri message.

Abang Johari said the recent increase in infections was worrying, with Sarawak among the states with the most number of new cases in the past few weeks.

“The situation was quite under control before this at the two-digit level but it has worsened, which is worrying. The SDMC (Sarawak disaster management committee) is receiving public criticism,” he said.

However, he is confident this would not prevent members of the committee from continuing to do their best to curb the spread of Covid-19.

He also said the state government would continue to obtain adequate vaccine supply, including through negotiation and direct procurement from suppliers, to complete immunisation by August.
