Catholic lawyers’ group lodges report over ‘altered’ archbishop video

The Catholic Lawyers’ Society Kuala Lumpur wants the authorities to identify the culprits who edited and distributed the clip on social media.

CLS president Godfrey Fernandez holds up a copy of the police report lodged yesterday.
PETALING JAYA:
A Catholic lawyers’ group has lodged a police report over a video containing parts of a speech by Archbishop Julian Leow from 2014 which they claim had been intentionally altered.

The Catholic Lawyers Society Kuala Lumpur (CLS) wants police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to identify the culprits who had edited and distributed the clip on social media.

The report was lodged yesterday at the Petaling Jaya police station by CLS president Godfrey Fernandez.

When contacted, former president Francis Pereira, who had accompanied Fernandez, said the editing of the video was deliberately and maliciously done to give a skewed interpretation of what was actually said by the archbishop.

“The archbishop never once insulted any religion.”

On Wednesday, CLS had condemned the “nefarious” video, which was uploaded on a page called the “Hud-Hud Crew”. In the video, Leow had purportedly spoken of his 25-year plan against Muslims.

The post, titled “Rahsia Besar: Rakaman Perancangan 25 Tahun Archbishop Katolik Kuala Lumpur Untuk Rebus Orang Islam Seperti Merebus Katak”, claimed that Leow had used an analogy of boiling frogs to describe his plan to apply pressure on Muslims in the country.

It also alleged that the archbishop had “admitted” that the issue on the use of the word “Allah” was part of the 25-year plan.

The post said the video was passed to the “Hud-Hud Crew” by anonymous members of the church, who supposedly wanted to thwart Leow’s plan which they believed would cause a rift between Muslims and Christians in the country.

Fernandez had previously said the video was taken out of context with the intention of threatening the religious peace and harmony enjoyed by people of different faiths in the country.
