Sarawak PAS information chief Zharudin Narudin said the party’s priority now is to ensure political stability at the state and national levels.
“As for a decision on whether to contest in Sarawak, we leave it to the central leadership since it involves our partner, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” he said in a statement today.
“We will fully support and respect any decision as we are committed to strengthening unity among all parties in Perikatan Nasional.”
Zharudin was responding to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement that Sarawak PPBM and PAS would give their full support to GPS to prevent a split among the PN parties.
Muhyiddin said seat allocations came second as it was more important to ensure PN parties stay united for GPS to achieve a landslide victory.
Zharudin also welcomed the announcement by the newly-formed PPBM-PAS central committee to deploy the PN election machinery and grassroot supporters to help GPS secure a big victory.
PAS spread its wings to Sarawak in 1996 but has not won any seats since its first participation in the state election in 2001.
The party contested 11 seats in the last state polls in 2016. They were Samariang, Pantai Damai, Muara Tuang, Sadong Jaya, Sebuyau, Beting Maro, Kakus, Jepak, Samalaju, Lambir and Pujut.
Meanwhile, Sarawak PPBM Youth said it is ready to assist and support GPS in the next state election.
“We believed that the grassroots members are anticipating strong cooperation between GPS and PN during the election,” it said in a statement.
