You can take my word for it, PM says on restoring Sabah, Sarawak rights

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says, however, that it is only possible if Perikatan Nasional obtains a two-thirds majority in the next general election.

KUCHING:
The government is committed to restore the status of Sabah and Sarawak according to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said today, promising to amend Article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution, for this purpose.

However, he admitted that the Perikatan Nasional-led government may not be able to fulfil the demand as it needs to have a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat to amend the constitution.

“If we can win big in the 15th general election, then it will be easier for us to do it as soon as possible.

“You can take my word for it,” he said at the Shared Prosperity Vision town hall session held here today.

He was responding to Sarawak chief minister Abang Johari Openg’s request to amend Article 160 (2) of the Federal Constitution as the current interpretation of the phrase “the Federation” refers to the federation established under the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957.

Abang Johari wants it to be amended to “the Federal Constitution established under the Malaysia Agreement 1963” instead, as it would recognise Sabah and Sarawak as more than just states, similar to those which made up Malaya in 1957.

Muhyiddin said he was aware of the request and also recognises it as being the wish of many Sarawakians.

“This is something that is close to the heart of the people of Sarawak and we are committed to restore and protect their rights. I also recognise that Sabah and Sarawak are not just states but a region in Malaysia,” he said.

“Thus, if there is anything they (Sabah and Sarawak) feel is not fair relating to MA63, we can always sit down together and further discuss it.”

He said the PN-led government is looking forward to improving federal-state relations on a more solid footing based on mutual respect and understanding.

On the Shared Prosperity Vision, Muhyiddin said the policy is important to ensure the well-being of every citizen in this country, regardless of their race and religion.

“We strive to do everything we can in the best interests of the people so that no one will be left behind,” he added.

He also said a total of 781 projects in Sarawak, worth RM4.5 billion had been approved under the first rolling plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

In addition, a total of RM988 million had been set aside under the 12th Malaysia Plan for 347 projects related to education, involving training programmes, as well as the repair and rebuilding of dilapidated schools across the state.

Meanwhile, under the National Digital Network, a total of 523 locations in rural Sarawak will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi at an average speed of 35Mbps by October this year.
