Afdlin who starred in over 40 movies, told Astro Awani that Anwar’s leadership qualities, as well as the latter’s readiness to forgive had attracted him to PKR.
“Datuk Seri Anwar persevered in championing his cause and is dedicated to standing up for the rakyat despite the suffering he and his family had to endure.
“This prompted me to join PKR,” he told the portal.
Afdlin, who is a former judge of the popular reality TV show “Raja Lawak Astro”, also hailed PKR as a party that looked out for all races even though it had a Malay leader.
Last month, Afdlin said he planned to get into politics to help the local creative industry and its players more effectively.
According to Awani, Anwar is set to announce Afdlin’s membership and that of rapper Altimet on April 1.
In 2012, it was reported that Afdlin had joined Umno with the hope of getting more people to support the then Barisan Nasional (BN) government under the leadership of former prime minister Najib Razak.
“I have always supported Umno from the outside and decided to come out of the closet so to speak, to show my support for Umno,” he was quoted as saying by The Star at the time.
