Making the announcement at a press conference today, Penang state executive councillor Jagdeep Singh Deo said he was confident the number of clinics will grow.
“Covid-19 is the enemy. Penang is ready to do all it can to collaborate with the federal government in the fight against Covid-19,” he said, adding that other state governments should do the same in reaching out to private clinics.
He urged science, technology, and innovation minister Khairy Jamaluddin to keep all state governments in the loop once a thorough vaccination plan is in place.
Jagdeep, who is also the state local government committee chairman, told the press that the vaccination plan should account for certain logistical limitations, especially when it comes to scheduling.
“In Penang alone, it took two to three months to test 50,000 out of 140,000 migrant workers.
“So, we should waste no time in preparing for the vaccine. Nor should we be taking this lightly,” he said of the concern over the government’s capacity to vaccinate everyone in the months to come.
He added that the helping hand from private clinics in the state would be crucial in getting around 1.4 million Penangites vaccinated in time.
