No electricity tariff hike, users to enjoy rebates for first half of 2021

The average base tariff rate will remain at 39.45 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh) next year.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has announced that the average base tariff rate for electricity will remain unchanged at 39.45 sen per kilowatt hour (kWh) next year.

Energy and Natural Resources Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said there will be a rebate of 2 sen/kWh for all Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) account holders from Jan 1 to June 30, 2021.

He said this would apply to all TNB users, both domestic and non-domestic.

Shamsul said with the rebate, some 7.5 million domestic consumers would see a discount of between 3.6% and 9.2% in their electricity bills, while commercial users would experience between 4% and 5.2% reduction.

Industrial users will see a discount of between 4.6% and 6.1%.

“The rebate is due to Putrajaya’s decision to extend TNB’s Second Regulatory Period under the Incentive Based Regulation (IBR) mechanism until Dec 31, 2021,” he said at a press conference.

He also said the government agreed to pass the fuel cost savings to all TNB users following the drop in coal and gas prices in the second half of the year.

This, Annuar said, was in line with the implementation of the Imbalance Cost Pass Through (ICPT) mechanism.

“We hope that this rebate offer can help alleviate the cost of living of the people and reduce the cost to run businesses affected by the the Covid-19 pandemic.”
