Ex-MAS CEO among 2 who survive copter crash

They say the other helicopter, believed involved in an aerial collision, landed safely.

The two on board this helicopter landed safely near a Tamil school in Taman Melawati.

Former Malaysian Airline System Bhd group CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya was among two people who survived a helicopter crash in Taman Melawati here this morning.

Jauhari, 66, was on board a helicopter that made an emergency landing after a midair collision involving two helicopters.

The other person with him on board the helicopter, Tan Chai Eian, 51, also survived the landing near the Taman Melawati Tamil school field.

The two men in the other helicopter died when it crash-landed.

Ampang Jaya police chief Mohamad Farouk Eshak confirmed that only one of the helicopters crashed in the incident.

Confirming that a collision had taken place in the air, Farouk said the dead had been identified as Mohamad Sabri Baharom, 56, and Mohd Irfan Fikri Mohamed Rawi, 44.

The other helicopter that crashed, killing two men.

He said investigations were currently being carried out to determine the cause of the incident.

“The two helicopters were from the same company and were believed to be flying between Subang and Genting Sempah.

“Police investigations are focusing on the cause of death. The probe into the cause of the incident will be carried out by the Civil Aviation Department,” he said.

Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong also confirmed a mid-air collision had occurred during a flight training exercise involving four crew members.

In a statement, he said the helicopter crash involved two G2CA helicopters (9M-HCA and 9M-HCB).

He said while one of the helicopters crash-landed, the other had made a successful emergency landing.

The Kuala Lumpur Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (KL ARCC) led rescue coordination efforts.

Wee said a technical investigation to determine the circumstances and cause of the accident had been launched by the ministry’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau (BSKU). The initial findings will be published within 30 days.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and his family today conveyed their condolences to the families of Sabri and Irfan.

In a Facebook post, Muhyiddin said he hoped that both families would exercise patience at this time. He also said that he was saddened over the accident and prayed the injured victims would recover quickly.
