‘It’s between the King and I’, Anwar says of audience with Agong

The PKR president claims the home ministry directed the police to find out names of parliamentarians supporting him to form a new government.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Anwar Ibrahim said today there is no need for others to know the full details of his recent meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong regarding his claim to have secured a majority to form a new government.

The PKR president said it was sufficient for the home ministry and politicians to know that letters of confirmation by the respective parties’ president had been handed over to the King.

The home ministry, Anwar claimed, had instructed police to find out the names of MPs backing him.

“But I told them my meeting with the Agong is between the King and I and it is inappropriate for people to know in detail what took place,” he told reporters after having his statement taken at Bukit Aman around 3pm.

Anwar said this when asked if police had asked him for the full list of MPs, said to be around 121 elected representatives.

“The matter is between the Agong and myself, it is none of the police or politicians’ business.”

On Monday, the police said they would call Anwar in for questioning by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit over a list of 121 MPs claimed to be supporting his bid for the prime minister’s post.

Bukit Aman CID director Huzir Mohamed said as of yesterday, 113 police reports had been lodged against the PKR president over his claim.

Investigations are being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Anwar was granted an audience by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Tuesday over his claim to have the majority support of MPs to form a new government.

At a press conference after the meeting, he claimed he had submitted documents to the King and confirmation of support from the heads of several political parties.

However, Istana Negara later said the opposition leader did not present a list of MPs who supported him but instead only informed the King on the number of those on his side.
