Fadillah said the ministry viewed the incident seriously and would not compromise on the safety and lives of the public, promising strict action once investigations are completed.
The works minister said the Construction Industry Development Board and Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) have also been instructed to audit all construction works that involve public safety.
“For the works ministry, the issue of workplace safety must be paid attention to and complied with by every worker involved in construction works.
“The incident yesterday could have been avoided if all parties adhered with the correct work system and procedure, according to the approved guidelines and specifications,” he said in a statement today.
He said the works to strengthen the highway parapet were completed at 5am this morning, with checks conducted to ensure its sturdiness.
“LLM and Prolintas must review the most suitable design to minimise the risk to the public and to workers.
“The developer and contractor have been ordered to take action to alleviate the burden and pressure faced by the victim and her family following yesterday’s incident.
“LLM and Prolintas have been instructed to recheck designs and constructions that involve risks to the public before resuming works for SUKE,” Fadillah said.
He added that the ministry was waiting for a report by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) on their findings after visiting the site yesterday.
DOSH today issued an immediate stop-work order on the installation of parapet walls at the SUKE project to allow for a comprehensive investigation to be conducted on the cause of the incident.
The woman in yesterday’s incident narrowly escaped death with just an injured hand when a concrete slab from the construction of the SUKE fell and hit her car.
Cheras district police chief Mohd Mokhsein Mohamed Zon said that the woman was driving along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) from Sungai Besi towards Ampang and was nearing a petrol station in Bandar Tasik Selatan when the one-metre square concrete slab fell on her car.
“The 25-year-old woman, who was driving a Proton Saga BLM, was rescued by members of the public before being sent to the hospital for treatment,” he said.
Prolintas, the project developer, later confirmed the accident and issued a stop-work order. It said the company would provide full cooperation for investigations into the accident.
