Recovering 1MDB assets still govt’s priority, says finance minister

Tengku Zafrul Aziz's assurances comes as senior representatives from Goldman Sachs fly to Malaysia to continue discussions with Putrajaya.

PETALING JAYA:
Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz today reiterated Putrajaya’s commitment to recovering assets linked to state investment arm 1MDB, saying it is still a “key priority” for the government.

He said the Attorney-General’s Chambers had been leading discussions and negotiations on the matter with international organisations including investment bank Goldman Sachs.

“This week, senior representatives from Goldman Sachs flew in to Malaysia to continue discussions and negotiations with the government.

“We hope these discussions will prove to be fruitful, and will enable us to move closer to achieving the desired results on the recovery of 1MDB assets,” he said in a statement.

He added that the government was taking every step to ensure a “fair and just” recovery value for the people.

Damansara MP Tony Pua last week urged Putrajaya to file an international suit to seize a luxury yacht formerly called Topaz worth RM2.93 billion purchased with funds linked to 1MDB.

Singapore’s Straits Times previously reported that the US Department of Justice (DoJ) had confirmed that the yacht, now known as A+, was purchased with funds linked to 1MDB.

It was not stated if the DoJ would seek to stake a claim on the yacht as part of its ongoing 1MDB asset forfeiture exercise.
