The inquest is being called amid claims of a missing person and contradictions by police from the trio’s families.
Thavaselvan Govindasamy, his brother-in-law, Sri Lankan national Janarthanan Vijayaratnam, and Maghendran Santhirasegaran died after what police said was a 7km high-speed car chase that ended at Jalan Batu Arang in the early hours of Sept 14.
Family members have however disputed police’s version of the incident, and spoken of a missing woman they say was together with the three men.
They said Janarthanan’s wife, Moganambal Govindasamy, was also in the car the trio was in when they were shot.
Moganambal was not accounted for in the police reports, although police later urged the public to help them locate the woman.
Police had said the shootout occurred when a patrol car ordered a car to pull over at Bandar Country Homes, Rawang.
They said the men ignored the order, leading to a chase during which they opened fire on the officers, forcing cops to return fire.
Police initially said the men were suspected robbers. Later, they said Thavaselvan and Maghendran were wanted members of the 08 gang in Rawang, while Janatharnan had overstayed his visa – claims denied by the families.
Selangor police chief Noor Azam Jamaluddin had also denied that there was any woman in the car, but opened a missing persons case to investigate the alleged disappearance.
Thavaselvan’s 31-year-old widow, Jasminder Kaur accused police of lying about their version of events, and claimed that her husband was beaten before his death.
Meanwhile, lawyer P Uthayakumar, acting for the families of Thavalselvan and Janarthanan, had also questioned the absence of evidence to back police’s claim that a shootout and a car chase had ensued.
He asked if there was any dashboard camera footage or post-mortem results to back police’s claims.
Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmad said all parties involved including police officers and rank and file personnel would be called to give their testimonies at the inquest.
