KUALA LUMPUR:
In a U-turn, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali will officiate both the PKR national youth congress and the women’s congress, it was announced today.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil confirmed this after a PKR political bureau meeting at the Parliament premises this evening, bringing an end to the controversy and acrimony over the earlier decision not to allow Azmin to open the youth congress..

“Both the meetings will be closed by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail on Friday evening,” Fahmi said.

Azmin’s supporters were up in arms when it was announced that Wan Azizah, who is the PKR adviser, would replace Azmin in officiating the youth congress. However, it was then said Azmin would open the women’s congress.

Fahmi said that all leaders of the party, other than those with official business elsewhere, would be attending the national congress in Melaka.

Amid the rift between the two camps over the youth congress, it was rumoured that a separate gathering would be held in Kuala Lumpur at the same time as the national congress in Melaka.

However, this was denied by various leaders of the party.

”There’s only one congress and I think Azmin himself has reiterated, (PKR vice-president) Chua Tian Chang has reiterated, (information chief) Shamsul Iskandar and I have remained consistent that there is only one congress,” he said.
