Speaking to reporters after an event here, Anwar urged the public to support Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership to carry out his duties, particularly focusing on the economy.
“The problem comes when there are moves to try to undermine the process, and these are from the opposition. It doesn’t bother us.
“We should focus on the economy and let Mahathir carry out his tasks,” he said.
Last week, all 18 PAS MPs and six BN MPs voiced their support for Mahathir to remain as prime minister for the full five-year term. This followed PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali’s call for Mahathir to carry on until the next general election.
Anwar had said yesterday the issue of power transition should be up to the PH Presidential Council to decide, and Mahathir said in Baku, Azerbaijan, that he had no problems with that.
Today, Anwar also said the discussion would not be about who the successor would be, but the timing of the power transition.
“It will happen but now, we need to focus on the economy and let Mahathir administrate the country effectively,” he said.
