Anwar said the opposition’s backing for Mahathir was irrelevant because the issue of power transition should be resolved internally by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Presidential Council.
“The opposition is always trying to create trouble,” he said after officiating a seminar on “Building a Malaysian Nation” here today,
Last week, all 18 PAS MPs and six MPs from BN expressed their support for Mahathir to remain as prime minister for the full five-year term to focus on the political and economic stability of the country.
Their support followed PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali’s call for Mahathir to be given the mandate to carry on until the next general election, scheduled for 2023.
Azmin, who is also the economic affairs minister, said it did not make sense for a mid-term power transition to take place, adding that it could affect business confidence in Malaysia.
Today, Anwar said “this is something that we will bring to the party council”.
“The ruling party should be the one to decide who’s fit to lead. There is no uncertainty,” he said.
Anwar had previously said the succession plan was in “black and white”, but PPBM’s leaders claimed no time frame had been fixed.
