This comes a day after student activist Edan Kon was stopped from receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting yesterday.
UM said security officers were convinced that Kon had planned to do a copycat act of the protest by fellow graduate Wong Yan Ke, who sparked controversy on Monday when he carried a placard on stage calling for the resignation of vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim.
“We have discovered a folded placard containing provocative words in the graduate’s possession,” the varsity said in a statement today, adding that the item was confiscated by auxiliary policemen.
It said Kon had the intention to disrupt the smooth running of the convocation ceremony, and as such he had to be escorted out of the Tunku Chancellor Hall.
Kon and Wong are former presidents of vocal campus group University of Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany).
Wong in his lone protest said vice-chancellor Rahim had shamed UM when it co-organised the Malay Dignity Congress on Oct 6.
Rahim was reported to have made a racially charged speech at the gathering which was organised by UM and three other public universities.
The congress made headlines after chief organiser Zainal Kling questioned the citizenship of non-Malays.
Police today have called Wong for questioning following a report against him by the university, who said his action had disrupted convocation protocols.
The UM convocation ceremony was officiated by Sultan Nazrin Shah on Saturday.
