MCA to attend signing of Umno-PAS charter

The party says this is to show the spirit of Barisan Nasional and to ensure that the gathering will observe the values of multiculturalism and moderation.

MCA says the collaboration between PAS and Umno is ‘inevitable’.
PETALING JAYA:
MCA will attend the signing of a charter between PAS and Umno tomorrow, saying the collaboration between the country’s two largest Malay-based political parties was “inevitable”.

In a statement, MCA said it would “consent and respect” any collaboration between opposition parties in Malaysia as long as it was in line with the Federal Constitution and upheld moderation.

It also said that before the signing of the charter and a memorandum of understanding, Umno had discussed the matter with them and fellow Barisan Nasional component MIC.

MCA and MIC had previously distanced themselves from the event, stating it was merely cooperation between Umno and PAS.

MCA said Umno had agreed that the unity gathering was meant to reach out to all races and had come to a consensus of not violating the spirit of moderation, which was espoused by BN.

“MCA has been invited to witness the signing of the chapter and the memorandum of understanding and we will send representatives for the event.

“This is to display the spirit of Barisan Nasional and to ensure that the gathering will strictly observe the values of multiculturalism and moderation,” it said.

The gathering, which kicked off earlier this morning, will continue tomorrow, featuring speeches by the Umno and PAS presidents, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Abdul Hadi Awang, respectively. They will then sign a charter to formalise their alliance.
