Firefighters put out 99% of Gelang Patah blaze

Combined operation comes to an end but state fire chief calls for vigilance in view of the hot weather.

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The integrated operation to put out the forest fire that had raged a total area of 16 hectares along Jalan Tanjung Kupang near Gelang Patah, has ended as of today.

State executive councillor Tan Chen Choon said the decision was made after the state fire department put out 99% of the blaze, which has raged for a week.

However, Tan said the patrolling and monitoring would continue to be carried out by JBPM and the relevant authorities around the area, to curb any open burning activities.

The state director of fire and rescue services, Yahaya Madis, urged local residents to be vigilant in view of the hot weather and open burning activities carried out by the villagers.

“The surrounding area also has dry vegetation. I advise the public, including the local residents that should they see a fire, they should act immediately to put it out instead of waiting for the fire and rescue fighters to arrive.

Tan lauded the Environment Department for placing the dust monitoring devices to record and gauge air quality at Tanjung Adang primary and secondary schools, especially as the primary school examinations, Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah, starts on Wednesday.
