Rantau independent candidate an Amanah member, claims PAS

PAS secretary-general says Mohd Nor Yassin joined Amanah earlier this month.

Mohd Nor Yassin is an independent candidate in the Rantau by-election.
PETALING JAYA:
Mohd Nor Yassin, an independent candidate in the Rantau by-election, is not a PAS member; says the Islamist party’s secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

In a statement, Takiyuddin said PAS’ records show Nor Yassin had joined Amanah on March 10, 2019.

“Nor Yassin, who is contesting as an independent candidate in Rantau, is an Amanah member, which is a component party of Pakatan Harapan.”

FMT’s attempts to contact Nor Yassin by telephone for comment failed.

Earlier today, it was reported that four candidates would be vying for the Rantau state seat.

Those contesting in the four-cornered fight are incumbent Mohamad Hasan from Umno, Dr Streram Sinnasamy from PKR, and independent candidates Malar Rajaram and Nor Yassin.

In the last general election, Mohamad was declared the winner of the seat after Streram was prohibited from entering the nomination centre as he did not have a pass from the Election Commission.

The Election Court declared Mohamad’s victory null and void following an appeal by PH and the Federal Court upheld the Election Court’s decision when it dismissed an appeal filed by Mohamad.

Campaigning for the by-election will last 14 days beginning today.

Polling will take place on April 13 and early voting starts April 9.
