Tanker lorry driver remanded over dumping of effluents into pond

Initial investigation shows the suspect may have been offered a contract by a company to dispose of the effluents.

A tanker lorry driver has been remanded for two days to facilitate investigations into the dumping of industrial effluents into a flood retention pond in Taman Eng Ann here last Thursday.

The order was issued by magistrate Roslizi Sulaiman today following the arrest of the 26-year-old man at a house in Jeram, Kuala Selangor, yesterday afternoon.

Police also seized a tanker lorry believed to have been used to transport the effluents for dumping into the pond.

Initial investigation showed the suspect may have been offered a contract by a company to dispose of the effluents.

Earlier, Selangor Environment, Green Technology, Consumer Affairs, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Hee Loy Sian said the clean-up of the pond resulted in the collection 28,000 litres of industrial effluents which had been kept in a temporary storage tank for proper disposal.

As many as 21 chemical substances from industrial waste were found to have been dumped into the retention pond.
