“If GST, BR1M and the fishermen’s subsidies can be abolished, why not AES?” asked Aziz, referring to the controversial automated traffic enforcement system.

He said Amanah had been against AES before the general election last year.

“I am surprised, why would they continue with AES with an upgrade,” he told FMT.

AES was operated by two private concessionaires. The PH government decided not to extend their contract which ended on Aug 31 last year, replacing them with the Road Transport Department.

An Amanah leader had earlier attracted criticism from BN politicians over a statement justifying the installations of AES cameras, saying it was within the principles of maqasid shariah (higher objectives of the law) to ensure road safety.

Aziz said the same principle should also be applied by PH by fulfilling its promise to abolish AES.
