Think carefully before deciding on party’s future, MCA delegates told

The MCA chief says he does not want to make predictions on what resolutions will be passed at the AGM.

KUALA LUMPUR:
MCA president Wee Ka Siong has urged delegates to think rationally and carefully before making decisions at the party’s annual general meeting today.

Speaking to reporters, he said he did not want to make any predictions about the resolutions that would be passed.

“Barisan Nasional to be dissolved? You will need to look back at what the resolution says,” he said when asked to comment on the proposal raised by MCA Youth for BN to be dissolved and for MCA to seek new partners.

“But what is important here is that the delegates will discuss and debate. Let us do so amicably and come to a decision.

“I do not want to make predictions on what will be passed,” he said.

Wee said delegates needed to know the implications of their decisions.

“If we do this, what is the follow-up action, how do we mentally prepare ourselves. The choice we make must be justified.

“Also, we want to see whether we have other options or further plans.

“There must be follow-up action regardless of the decision we make,” he said.

MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong had called on the party to push for the dissolution of BN thus allowing it to look for partners who share a common ideology to form a new coalition.

Wong reportedly said this was the stand MCA Youth took after a closed-door discussion.

On MCA purportedly shutting out other BN component parties from this year’s AGM, Wee said this was not true.

“I had informed all BN component parties. When Liow (Tiong Lai) was president, a decision was made by the central committee on Sept 30 that the AGM would be an internal affair. That we would not be inviting BN leaders.

“This time, we only focused on the delegates, party veterans and non-governmental organisations.

“Why NGOs? This is because MCA originated from a Chinese NGO consultative council,” he said.

Earlier in his policy speech, Wee said the central delegates, numbering 1,637, would be able to explore and discuss MCA’s position in BN.

“This is an example of the new leadership granting central delegates with more power. We want to allow more party comrades to decide the fate of MCA and we hope to gather more opinions and views to ensure that MCA’s transformation is in line with the people’s aspirations.

“We will be making a very important decision in today’s AGM, a decision that will determine the future of MCA.

“In this crucial moment of an uncertain political situation, we must not make such a decision in haste.

“Be it leaving or staying in Barisan, disbanding Barisan or adopting a wait and see stance, I hope all delegates can keep calm and speak rationally, while convincing all of the current situation and follow-up actions,” he said.

Wee said MCA had come into existence due to the Chinese community, and called for careful thought and plan for the present and future interests of the Chinese.

“The future of the Chinese community and MCA are directly related to our long-term benefits, so we have to be extra cautious.

“At the same time, we need to examine issues from the perspective of a Malaysian. We have to refrain from making emotional statements. Be rational and look further ahead into the future,” he said.

The matter concerning MCA’s position in BN was also raised in Liow’s speech. The outgoing president urged the new leadership to handle MCA’s relationship with BN with care.

He pointed out that after the May 9 general election, many component parties had walked out and left BN with only five members, the main ones being Umno, MCA and MIC.

“This may seem to be a fresh political scenario, but it is only back to the situation of the foundation years of the Alliance. MCA is a founding partner of Alliance and BN.

“We fully comprehend the Chinese community’s perception towards Umno, but MCA must strategise well to come out with a wise decision.

“We need not rush things through, but move only after careful consideration, and strengthening MCA should be the most urgent among the important agenda,” he added.
