Raise minimum marriage age to 20, not 18, urges PKR delegate

Ermeemarianna Saadon says proposal is to protect health of young girls.

SHAH ALAM: A Selangor PKR Women’s wing delegate has proposed to the government to raise the minimum marriage age to 20.

Ermeemarianna Saadon said this was to protect the health of young girls and also encourage them to gain more knowledge.

“Those aged under 20 are too young and are not mature enough to be mothers or run families on their own.

“It is also seen as a reason why domestic violence and divorces occur more among young couples,” she said during the PKR women’s wing national congress here today.

Selangor PKR delegate Ermeemarianna Saadon says early marriage is seen as a reason for domestic violence and divorces.

She said women should also be going all out to gain knowledge at that age instead of settling down.

Ermeemarianna said the government needed to draft related policies because the issue is getting increasingly serious.

Earlier this year, the marriage of a 41-year-old man to an 11-year-old girl saw many Malaysians react in alarm.

This prompted the Pakatan Harapan to tighten laws governing both civil and Islamic marriages.

In Malaysia, the minimum age for marriage is 18 for boys and 16 for girls.

However, an exception to the rule can be made with the approval of a menteri besar or chief minister.

The shariah courts can also approve the marriage of a child at any age.
