PETALING JAYA:
Cheras Umno division leader Syed Ali Alhabshee has become the latest to announce his resignation from the party, less than a week after the exit of Umno veterans Mustapa Mohamed and Anifah Aman.

Syed Ali’s resignation was confirmed in a Facebook post by one of his followers, Amran Mamat.

“With great sadness, Syed Ali Alhabshee announced his exit from Umno at 12.55pm today,” he said.

Syed Ali is the third Umno leader to leave the party in the last week.

Mustapa, who is the MP for Jeli, resigned on Sept 18, saying Umno’s direction was no longer in line with his principles.

Anifah, the Kimanis MP, resigned the following day.

A total of five MPs have quit Umno since the general election: Mustapa, Anifah, Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, and Bagan Serai MP Noor Azmi Ghazali.

Umno won 54 parliamentary seats on May 9.
